Richard had already written and illustrated over five hundred pages of Dale and Aled comics before being accepted at Leeds Metropolitan University, where the Graphic Arts & Design Degree course was known for encouraging comic artists; previous students had included Duncan Fegrado and Mike Hadley. Richard fine-tuned his talent while on the course, producing the first of the Reg comics, Reg vs the Moon Zombies, during the first year in 1992, and the storyboard for The Silent Years the following year. The second Reg comic, The Lights of Fylingdales, was produced during the third year. A third and final Reg story, the Reg Over The Edge graphic novel, was finally completed in 1999 and is the single longest comic project Richard worked on.
