By Richard Sargent
Richard wrote and produced a long run of comics while at school, beginning in 1986 with a cartoon strip in the school magazine, 'Super Rice Krispie Man & Milk Man'.
Then in 1987, while at Henry Fanshawe school in Dronfield, he began what would become a popular series of 16-page comics. The Dale comics ran for twelve issues before evolving into the Aled comics, ending with a run of 'Annualed' specials in 1991/2.
We are currently in the process of uploading comics to view, so only a selection are available to read in full at the moment (those with titles in red). More comics will be added to this archive as time goes by. Click on a thumbnail for full comic...

The Dale Comics
Richard's first series of comics, produced in 1987 and 88. These early works began as not much more than doodles, but a clear progression can easily be charted during the twelve issue run. The comics were photocopied by the father of schoolfriend (and starring character) Richard Myers, and were circulated among teachers and pupils at Henry Fanshawe School. |

The Missing Episodes
All of the artwork for the photocopied issues remains intact, but there were several one-off pieces which are perhaps gone forever...
1. The original versions of Dale 1 and Dale 2. These prototypes for the series were pencil-drawn on A3 paper, much like the Xmas specials that came later. The stories featured a couple of characters who never appeared in the full comics such as Caroline Needham and Paul 'wireless' Whyler. Almost certainly lost for good, and probably for the best!
When the comics began being photocopied (with Dale 3) the absence of 1 and 2 led to the production of a 'Special Edition' issue which comprised of newly rewritten versions of the first two stories.
2. Dicky vs Dale. An A5 notebook belonging to Ian 'Dicky' Jones, and filled with his own idea for a spin-off story drawn by Richard. Never reproduced and rarely seen even at the time, it is unlikely to show up now.
3. Spar Trek; The 'A' Level project. A large format notebook which was gradually filled with about 70 pages of Spar Trek comic strip, featuring all the regular Aled characters. Owned by Mark Lax, this curiosity may reappear one day (if he's kept it!)...
